In a middle-aged Danish general population, the transcription factor KLF11 may interfere with glucose homeostasis, since those with the Gln62Arg gene variant have higher fasting serum insulin, C-peptide levels, and HOMA insulin resistance indices. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and pregnenolone, both of which enhance cognitive performance in rodent models, are correlated with temporal cortex brain levels of these neurosteroids, suggesting that CSF neurosteroids may potentially serve as proxy or surrogate markers for brain levels. Neurosteroids may also be relevant to the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease, in which CSF DHEA levels are elevated and related to neuropathological disease stage.
